Mustang Tiji Festival Trek 2017

Mustang Tiji Festival Trek is one of popular travel menu for trekkers in Nepal. This festival celebrated on the month of May inside courtyard of Mustang Royal Palace. Tiji (Te-Tse) festival is a fascinating annual three-days long festival consisting of Buddhist rituals. The festival is indigenous to Lo-Manthang. Actual festival name is Tempa Tserim in short form (Te-Tse). This festival commemorates the victory of Dorje Sonu over a demon called Ma Tam Ru Ta a vicious creature feeding on human beings and causing storms and droughts.

During the Mustang Tiji Festival the monks of Lo-Manthang’s Choedhe monastery perform ritual dances. The harassment of Ma Tam Ru Ta in a dance called “Tsa Chham” on the first day, the birth of Dorje Sonu as the demon’s son on the second day called “Nga Chham” and the attempt to return the demon to Lord Buddha’s realm on the third and final day are enacted during the performances. The Tempa Tserim (Te-Tse) or Tiji festival dances are all organized by the Choedhe Monastery, which belongs to the Sakya sect of Buddhism. A local Rimpoche heads the monastery. About 65 monks from Lo Manthang, Nhenyul and Chhosyer reside in this monastery.

Every year follow of travelers is growing up during the time of Tempa Tserim (Te-Tse) or Tiji festival. In experience of 2016 all lodges where packed in Lo-Manthang, many travelers have to drive by Jeep to another destination near by for overnight stay and come to Lo Manthang again for festival every day.

Shambhala Holidays take tents with group in emergency use. From the coming season we organize camping trek during Tiji (Te-Tse) festival. Every year we take group to Lo-Manthang, Mustang on the time of Tiji (Te-Tse) festival.
